چکیده

This article covers the MRI evaluation of patients with epilepsy, with a focus on neuroimaging in those with localization-related epilepsy who may be potential epilepsy surgery candidates. The article includes structural MRI to identify a lesion, functional MRI to identify the eloquent cortex and diffusion tensor imaging to identify the eloquent white matter tracts. We consider the equipment, protocol or procedures, and reporting of MRI in patients with epilepsy. Recommendations for both adult and pediatric patients are described for protocols and procedures. The authors hope that this article will provide a standardized approach for clinical imaging of patients with suspected localization-related epilepsy who may be evaluated for epilepsy surgery. J. The effect of incorporating the quantitative analysis besides visual assessments of 18F-FDG brain PET images for the localization of epileptogenic zones

Introduction: FDG Brain PET is a valuable paraclinical tool for presurgical assessments of patients suffering from refractory epilepsy. By the widespread accessibility of PET, recognizing the functional lesions has become a current practical method especially in preoperative evaluations of the partial epilepsy disorders. The aim of our study was to assess the impact of quantit...

Sleep-Related Seizures in Refractory Focal Epilepsy: Electroclinical Findings and Surgical Outcome

Background: Sleep Seizures (SSs) generally occur in refractory focal epilepsy, but their detailed characteristics and circadian patterns are still controversial. The effect of SSs on epilepsy surgery outcome has been addressed in few studies without definitive prognostic value.   Objectives: This study investigated the characteristics of SSs and their prognosis in refractory focal epilepsy. M...

The role of FDG-PET, ictal SPECT, and MEG in the epilepsy surgery evaluation.

2-[18F]Fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), ictal single-photon-emission computed tomography (ictal SPECT), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) represent three established functional imaging tests that offer unique information toward the localization of epilepsy for surgery evaluation and treatment. When these tests are combined with high-resolution magnetic fresonance ...

From the American Epilepsy Society 2009 Annual Course. Non-substrate-directed epilepsy and surgery: PRO and CON.

The surgical treatment of epilepsy is the most efficacious therapeutic modality for patients with a medically refractory partial seizure disorder. Epilepsy surgery has been demonstrated to be both effective and well tolerated in individuals with medial temporal lobe epilepsy associated with mesial temporal sclerosis. The identification of an MRI pathological substrate may be useful in identifyi...
